Lessons are 30 minutes in length.

Why not 1 hour?
I used to teach 1 hour sessions and found that there is just far too much being covered in 1 hour for the student to make progress as quickly as they would like.

Less is more and having a 30 minute session will give you enough material to practice and perfect without overwhelming you.

Here is the double edged answer which is both good news and bad news ...
You will never stop learning! Even the greatest guitarists are still honing their skills and taking their playing to the next level.

However, you will learn to play your very first song with me from your very first lesson! (No, not a boring nursery rhyme. A real song that you would have heard on the radio).  Imagine impressing your friends being able to play a classic hit after just ONE LESSON!

Whatever guitar you have will be fine (if you already own one). However, if you are going out to buy one I recommend starting on an acoustic guitar as they "work" anywhere you want to take it. You don't need electricity or to plug it in.

If you are completely new to guitar, your fingers will get quite sore and many players find starting on a nylon string guitar is less punishing on the fingers than a steel string.

This is a matter of personal choice, but I prefer more solid picks over the soft and floppy ones. A good 0.7mm pick is my choice, but try a few and choose the one that feels right for you.

This is up to you. I am happy to teach you to read music if you wish, but most players don't need to read music.

It is definitely something you can learn later. (Unless you are wanting to play classical guitar, then we start with note reading from the very start).

Tablature is a way of reading music without actually reading music. Tablature is a popular form of putting on paper (or a screen) a visual representation of the guitar neck and frets so you know which note to play.

Practice!

Changing chords effortlessly and quickly is key to making songs flow without awkward pauses between changes.

I will teach you some tips and tricks to change between common chords whilst minimizing the need to lift every finger.

Aim for frequent and short sessions. Practicing just 15 minutes a day every day is far more effective than practicing for hours once per week.

Minimize distractions and relax into your practice sessions. Focus on the material you are learning and resist the temptation to start "mucking around" on the guitar.

Steel strings are on electric guitars as well as some acoustic guitars.

Some acoustic guitars give you the option of nylon strings. These are a little easier on tender fingers that have not become seasoned to playing.

The sound is quite different but if you are a complete beginner, you might find a nylon string guitar a great entry point.
